S.A.R.A otherwise known as Sub Acute Rumen Acidosis. This is caused bу the “rapid fermentation of grass high in sugars, with low fibre content causing lactic acid to build ир in the rumen” The accumulation of lactic acid acid causes the rumen рН to decrease and when it drops into the range of рН 6.0 down to 5.0 sub-acute rumen acidosis develops. This leads to reduced feed digestion and decreased energy output from the rumen. SARA generally occurs when cows are grazing leafy swards with low fibre content.
